My name is Dave and I am interested in and researching crowd psychology.
My āsimpleā mission is to encourage people to use #CrowdLeader when sharing something positive.
As a surprisingly unused hashtag, I believe that this could become a clean dataset and valuable tool for many things from education to artificial intelligence. When analysed in line with my general research question, how do group boundaries and membership affect behaviour? I believe that it could provide individuals up-to-date peer-generated information.
I am also someone who suffers with mental health difficulties and believe that changes in an individuals use of social media and the IoT could be used to help identify when people are relapsing or in need of support. Anyone who knows of people looking for research participants in this area, please let me know

Hello my name is Karl Mc Carthy and I am the commercial officer for a registration software company specialising in digital conferences.
Based out of Dublin, Ireland I have had a number of startups under my belt over the years and spent the bones of a decade working as a management consultant. In the past 18 months I have begun to rail against the notification culture and I am interested to learn more. Luckily my current company is conscious of its responsibilities but I do not feel that is replicated in the greater ecosystem both here in Europe or in the US.
My focus is the impact technology is having on adolescents and the ramifications for the future, how we can educate parents and their children on appropriate use and place responsibilities on the startups themselves. I am excited to learn from those who have been in the space a lot longer than I, it feels like this community could be the the canary in the mine!
I am a mobile engagement consultant at a mobile app analytics and messaging company in the United States. My clients range from SMB to Enterprise brands seeking to use granular insights to create meaningful engagement for end users.
I am personally and professionally interested in the topic of digital addiction and wellness. Please do not hesitate to reach out.
Hi! My name is Christian and I am a rising junior Economics major at the University of Missouri.
I started out at Mizzou as a plucky Computer Science major interested in machine learning and looking to make a difference. I was already somewhat skeptical of corporate motives around technology, but what really inspired me to decide on my path was a short story called What It Means When a Man Falls from the Sky by Lesley Nneka Arimah. Its an amazing story that touches many issues, but all of them came back to the direction of scientific progress, which was very much motivated by move fast and break things.
I currently do research on open source software communities with the CHAOSS project, helping develop tools to figure out what it means for a OSS project to be healthy and what metrics can show that. I also have a internship at the Management Performance Hub of the State of Indiana where we do data analytics to help improve government operation.
I am currently on going into a Public Policy Masters or PhD. program and I really want to focus on policy to help direct the development of technology in a positive direction and make sure that all people can reap the benefits of technological advancement.
I filled out the Get Involved Google Form here, but I havenāt heard back. I am looking for opportunities to get started doing to the research that I want to spend my career doing, so if you have any advice or opportunities, or just want to hear more about my thoughts, please feel talk to me!
Hey Everyone Im Pavan Kiran a computer science student , I have a wide range of interests. I know right now I dont have much to say about my work but the vision of people here aligned a lot to mine and so I wanted to be a part here. Would love to help with anything I can.
Iām Laurent, from France, I work on freelance design since 18 years. Very impressed by everyone here and the willingness to understand our time and the tools we build and use everyday. Itās totaly legitimate and healthy. I worked with a lot of clients who have a lot of strange and weird requests : āMake me an addictive application, How to reach young people and stick them to my website, etcā.
I managed a strong communities around little Flash games in the 2000ā. Now itās the past, an people here know why.
Social networks aim toā¦ everybody on earth. So I aim to build a new brand to reach the general public on the impact of technology on our lives. Even if itās nice to rub people who think like us, I think we have to be able to reach everybody, and talk to them to imagine our world without the giants.
My first attempt is here : After Gafa
Hi! I am Sivani from India. I am an RF-EMF (Radiofrequency Electromagnetic Field) researcher, interested in the biological impacts of radiofrequency fields on living systems, mechanism of action of RF-EMF on living systems and its mitigation. I have a PhD in Zoology (Radiation Biology). Currently, I am exploring ādigital dementiaā in childhood. Glad to be a part of this excellent initiative by Tristan Harris and Co.
In my opinion, this technology is both a boon and a bane, can be destructive or constructive, depending on its use. And for the parents of today, it is a massive, massive challenge to navigate this digital super highway along with their kids. Shortly, I will be releasing my book on the topic. My other passion is music! I am ready to extend any support for this much-needed initiative.
Hello! My name is Nina Hersher. Iām an Oasis in the Overwhelm Facilitator and MSW individualized in digital culture and norms of connectivity in the 21st century. My professional experience lies at the intersection of ed-tech start-ups and mental heath. Much of the work I do involves teaching people about presence and mindfulness in the digital age so they can cultivate healthy relationships with others, and practice self-care to recharge themselves! My goals and values align with those of The Center for Humane Technology to work towards technology that protects our minds and replenishes society. I believe technology should rise up to support us, rather than deplete us.
I have a small digital wellness practice and am searching for opportunities to be part of larger tech wellness initiatives! If anyone is interested in connecting I would love to chat. You can reach me here, at nhersher@gmail.com, or through my website nourishinghabits.com.
Thanks to this wonderful group for your amazing work!
I work as a backend and ML developer in Sweden for a big local media publisher. I try to be active in the political and moral discussions that goes on every day and I believe the role of technology to be of utmost importance when we shape society into what we want it to be for generations to come.
I hope to find some very illuminating discussions here to contribute to. Cheers!
My name is Ben and Iām a software developer in Toronto. Iām passionate about natural human computer interaction, accessibility, and using technology to enrich creativity and communication. I want to see technology that does more than reduce the amount of time to complete a task (at the expense of the complexity of the outcome). I also run a blog where I try to share interesting software and hardware projects hoping to lure those on the edge of creating their own to get started (deliberately not linking, as thatās not why Iām here).
I am also excited to learn some new philosophies that I can use to ensure the software I write is as user focused and beneficial as possible. I think there is a lot of good intentions in the developer community, but perhaps a shortage in creativity beyond the obvious business models.
Like many of you I have also been concerned about the growing presence of social media in my life; doubly so after realizing addictive mechanisms are deliberately built into these networks simply so we return. Iām so thrilled to have found this community which is helping me shape and understand some ideas that have been abstract thoughts in my head for quite a while.
hi Randy, hi all;
since this is about building and I am a newly here allow me to introduce myself briefly. I am interior-architect/researcher/writer, connected to Council and AIOTI, in both my focus is technology/iot/dwelling. I work on/research a more human focused built environment in which technology is not the primary issue. Much tech is there because it can be; not because it answers a question. I believe tech in our home should serve a purpose and safeguard our privacy; thatās why we have a home in the first place. Lok forward to your comments,
best, Martin
Hello, My name is Christopher. I am a software developer, currently working in web development. I moved into my career because I saw the great potential in influencing the world for good through technology. While I have learned many things along the way, including the power for destruction and isolation that technology holds, I still see my work as an amazing opportunity to have a voice, to serve people, and to help people work toward their aspirations on both on individual and an institutional level.
What is tempering my excitement, and driving me toward introspection, is the impact of digital technology on my own life (my marriage and my relationship with friends, family, and coworkers) and on our society. I am seeing a marked increase in isolation, a slow corrosion of physical, communal connectivity, a rise in ignored and un-addressed cognitive disorders, and a blind dash into the unknown of digital, technological āadvancesā that give little thought to our human condition. On top of this, we see intentional and often ignored abuse of the power of technology to enslave the mind and consume the cognitive beauty, complexity, and unknowableness of billions of people around the world.
While I think there is a type of greatness in my work as a developer, I am learning to acknowledge that there is an inherent, to paraphrase Uncle Ben, responsibility in my work as well that I must fully understand and adapt as a given reality in everything I do. I must understand the humans I serve, I must empathize, I must care, and then I must act in full awareness of who exactly am I influencing and what exactly am I doing to these wondrous humans that are using the tools I create. Anything less would be brass. Anything less would be lazy apathy.
To put it simply I must be human in my work and know that it is a very human people that I serve.
Iām a professor at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN. I normally teach classes on memory and attention, but next Spring Iām teaching a class on āHow technology changes your brainā. This topic is a little out of my direct area of expertise (I study perceptual learning in fingerprint examiners), so Iām here for resources for my students.

Mainly, I am here to discuss Validbook idea and to find people interested in its development and maintenance.
Also, I have interest in UX design. I am interested to learn more about humane design and everything that is related to it (well-being, psychology, impact on democracy etc). Here are my thoughts on the current Social Networking Servicesā issues and their causal pathways, with description of a few UX features that can fix them - https://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-credentials/2018Jun/0125.html
Hi.
Iām Ruben an webdesigner from the Netherlands.
The past years all that costumers want is to become great on Facebook. It appears that thatās their only goal.
Theyāre forgetting there key costumers. Are they on Facebook, do they find you or search for you on Facebook. They donāt care. You have to be great on Facebook or youār doing sommething wrong is their thought.
The ones that donās use facebook or other social media arenāt less succesfull.
That was my first moment when I thought we donāt only need social media.
Personal contact is more important.
It seems like that is more and more forgotten in our society.
Tech is not bad but we must realise that e need to create our own borders for it.
My name is Darnell Barkman, I spent the last 6 years working as a peacebuilder in the context of armed groups, gangs and the War on Drugs in the Philippines. I organized and catalyzed networks of active citizens mostly through Christian networks and churches. Iām also a pastor. I recently moved with my family back to Canada to a small town near Vancouver called Yarrow. Join me here for coffee or a hike some time.
Iām interested in everything that Humane Tech is doing because Iāve seen how tech can manipulate people. A primary example is how it motivated an entire nation to vote for the current president of the Philippines. The Philippines is the number one FB using country in the world and many nationals were heavily swayed by FB campaigns in the last elections. I could feel it was fishy, and now we have stats showing how users were manipulated.
Development, peacebuilding preventing violent extremism are major areas of work/concern for me. I want to see local people all over the world living with Human Security: freedom from fear, freedom from want and freedom to live with dignity. When people donāt have these they can be radicalized and manipulated much more easily. ISIS is a prime example of how this is done.
I think the work of Humane Tech is important for North Americanās, but, from my friendship & work with staff/consultants for the UN, Asia Development Bank, World Bank and national security staff in the Philippines, and other non-state armed groups I see that the work of Humane Tech is going to be very important in the lives of vulnerable people all over the developing world. As the internet gets to more people malicious manipulation will lead to life or death for a lot of people. Not to paint a dooms day pic. Good people are doing amazing things in these countries too.
So, thanks for hosting this open space! Thanks for putting your reputations and lives on the line to create a healing cultural change in the global web network! Iām looking forward to getting to know some of you over the next years and hopefully find some ways to meet up and work together.
Hey everyone! I work in the American Labor Movement and you can call me Greg. My focus in joining this forum is to learn, cultivate, and share practical forms of resistance to Silicon Valleyās excessesāspecifically with others who (like me) cannot afford a personal assistant to do the resisting. Below is a little more of my background.
My skepticism around technology and social media led me to abstain initially in most areas, despite belonging to an age bracket primed to gobble up smart phones and Facebook posts. The overarching business model as I understood itāquietly monetizing my interactions with others by tracking everythingāstruck me as creepy and amounting to a kind of theft. In addition to privacy concerns, I fretted about what these new mediums would mean for content and communication along the lines of Neil Postmanās āAmusing Ourselves to Death.ā
Nobody around me cared. Out of a desire to connect with extended family I joined Facebook. Out of a duty to work I begrudgingly purchased a smart phone. Despite my misgivings, I became caught in the kind of currents those of us here know all too well, losing hours and days to unhealthy cycles of consumer behavior. Only more recently did it dawn on me how valid, if not modest, my suspicions were. Luckily others were picking up on the problem, too.
Restricting the intrusion of tech and social media is now my hobby. Some might view my aim as quixotic, if not hypocriticalāI donāt have the income to sever all ties, after all, so I strive for a kind of shifting truce over a more comprehensive and principled Luddite life. Still, it seems essential to me to apply myself to the challenge. I look forward to working with others here who agree.
Hi, Iām Jasmine. Iām a researcher based in Los Angeles and I have an MA in sociology. As a user of digital platforms, Iāve seen firsthand (as has everyone) how destructive uncritical design can be and Iām interested in design and user research to design better and more ethical platforms and technologies. I want to understand how we can continue to innovate while keeping peopleās needs and our social structures and interactions (thatās the sociologist in me) top of mind.
Hi All, What do we do in this actively dangerous world when we want to put down our tech and find respite in the natural world? As the wild and farmland and suburbian areas are overdeveloped into concrete and glass wastelands - safe passage ways and bridges and green santuaries and oases for humans and creatures are becoming ever more necessary. I am interested in helping to create balance, harmony, connectedness, and health, wealth, & longetivity for not only humans, but for the world we come out of. If you look around at how prosperity is being developed - it is very narrow-sighted- still using 20th century building and architechtural concepts to develop properties, etc. As a visionary, I see the urban environment taking on a very different character as the 21st Century evolves. Humans now have the capability to design an urban environment that connects via verdant living pathways over traffic at levels above the city. (Imagine Futurama intro that shows a vegetated-vertically-elevated-connected City of Wonder where people walk/scoot through the air above traffic!) These pathways would allow for views, al fresco living, and incorporate respite for native fauna & flora & creature pathways across the city. Why donāt we put ALL of our heavy vehicular city traffic under a layer of living green parks for āslow traffic.ā ? We will need to direct drone traffic away from humans using humane tech! Humane tech will allow us to light our cities at appropriate times with appropriate spectrums to control light pollution. => Just one of many visionary ideas Iād like to share and discuss. I will listen to your visions, views, ideas! What would you build in your community that would help Terraform the Urban Environment in a most humane way? image|666x500
